iOS Tech Lead / Maintainer of a fork at Telement — manage the architecture of the corporate messenger's iOS client
Telement is a startup developing a secure corporate messenger based on Matrix (a fork of Element X). We are looking for an iOS Tech Lead who will ensure development speed, architectural integrity, and maintainability of the fork.
Responsibilities:
- Architectural design and support of the iOS client fork (SwiftUI, iOS 17+);
- Integration with Rust SDK via FFI (Swift Package) — designing boundaries between UI and core;
- Regular synchronization with the upstream (Element X): merge strategy, conflict resolution, divergence minimization;
- Release management: crash triage, hotfix process, CI/CD;
- Code review, setting standards and design patterns for SwiftUI;
- Mentoring iOS developers (as the team grows).
What we expect from you:
- 6+ years of commercial iOS development experience;
- Confident command of Swift, SwiftUI, and UIKit interoperability (UIViewRepresentable, working with multiple UIWindows) on large codebases;
- Deep understanding of Swift Concurrency: async/await, actor isolation, task cancellation, diagnostics of races and deadlocks — these are regular production tasks for us;
- Experience integrating a native application with an external core via FFI/bindings (Rust/C/ObjC) — and readiness not only to consume but also to contribute fixes to the core fork;
- Ability to design a fork strategy: regular upstream merges, conflict policy, boundaries of "own" code;
- Experience working with security-sensitive code: client-side cryptography, keychain, access recovery programs — or readiness to quickly dive into it under review;
- Experience in iOS release management: crash triage, hotfix process, CI/CD at the team support level;
- Practice of AI-assisted development (Claude Code, Cursor, and similar) and readiness to build such processes in the team — this is part of our daily workflow;
- English B1+ (reading documentation, correspondence).
Bonus points:
- Rust at a reading and minimal editing level, understanding the cost of FFI and where to fix issues — in the wrapper or in the core (we have actual edits in Rust crates of forks);
- Experience with Notification Service Extension and background modes: push decryption, cross-process coordination with the main application;
- Experience with messenger network wrappers: proxies (SOCKS5), knowledge of xray-core, server-driven configuration via well-known, delegated homeservers;
- Experience with the Matrix ecosystem or E2EE messengers;
- Familiarity with xcodegen, Sourcery, snapshot testing.
Conditions:
- Fully remote work, flexible schedule with overlap for Moscow time;
- Salary: from $4000 to $5500 (negotiable);
- Payments twice a month;
- Opportunity to influence the architecture and strategic development of the product;
- Friendly team, minimal bureaucracy.
Selection process:
- HR Screening;
- Team Interview;
- Offer.
