About BAMPFA

The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) uses the power of art and film to spark curiosity, inspire creativity, provoke meaningful conversation and create community.

As part of a major website redesign, BAMPFA is developing a refreshed digital experience that better reflects its identity, connects audiences with its programming, and makes information more accessible and engaging.

We're seeking a freelance copywriter to help bring this experience to life through thoughtful, clear, and compelling website content.

About the Project

BAMPFA is seeking an experienced website copywriter to develop original copy for evergreen pages of its new website. These pages have straightforward content needs and require no specialized expertise in art or film, but should reflect BAMPFA's distinctive voice and offer visitors a clear, welcoming experience.

The copywriter will collaborate with BAMPFA's Digital Marketing Manager and content lead, who will provide all necessary background materials, page objectives, brand guidelines, and editorial guidance throughout drafting and revisions.

With the content strategy and brand positioning already established, this engagement focuses on copywriting and execution, not strategy development.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft original, engaging, and concise website copy for assigned webpages.
• Translate provided content briefs, reference materials, and messaging guidelines into polished, audience-focused copy.
• Maintain consistency with BAMPFA's established brand voice: credible, rich, friendly, warm, and surprising.
• Structure content for digital readability, with clear headings, concise descriptions, and intuitive calls to action where appropriate.
• Adapt writing to the purpose, audience, and functionality of each page.
• Collaborate with BAMPFA's internal marketing manager and content lead to incorporate feedback and refine drafts.
• Deliver final copy in an organized, agreed-upon format ready for website implementation.

Who We're Looking For

We're seeking a thoughtful, collaborative writer who can balance creativity with clarity and work effectively within an established editorial framework.

Ideal Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience writing website copy, ideally for cultural institutions, nonprofits, educational organizations, or other mission-driven organizations.
• Strong ability to translate complex or institutional information into accessible, engaging, audience-friendly language.
• Experience working from established brand guidelines, content briefs, and editorial direction.
• Understanding of digital writing best practices, including scannability, content hierarchy, UX writing, and user-focused messaging.
• Excellent editing skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and respond constructively to editorial feedback.
• An appreciation for art, film, culture, and public-facing institutions is a plus, but specialized curatorial knowledge is not required.

Project Scope & Collaboration

This is a defined, project-based freelance engagement with the following anticipated parameters:

• Pages: Approximately 10–15 evergreen webpages (e.g., About pages)
• Estimated total word count: 2,500 words
• Estimated project hours: 25–30 hours
• Anticipated timeline: November 9 – December 14, 2026
• Revision rounds: 2
• Meetings: Attend a virtual kickoff meeting and brief weekly check-ins, with additional communication handled asynchronously.

Final page assignments, deliverables, and revision expectations will be confirmed before work begins.

Insurance

Successful candidates must obtain and maintain, through the end of the Agreement, a blanket certificate naming “The Regents of the University of California” as additional insured to cover services performed under this Agreement.

The Museum will assist in arranging and covering the costs of said insurance, estimated not to exceed $800.
