We are looking for an independent Lead Backend Developer who can combine strong technical expertise with backend team management.
This is a hands-on role: about 50% development / 50% technical leadership.
The key area of responsibility is full production ownership: architecture, code, databases, performance, monitoring, stability, and critical incident resolution.
As the company develops products in the online privacy & security domain, a good understanding of networking and practical experience with VPN / ZTNA / network security or other products with a significant network component is critical for the position.
Must-have
- 6+ years of commercial experience in backend development;
- 2+ years of experience as Lead / Tech Lead / Team Lead;
- experience in managing and developing a backend team;
- strong hands-on background and willingness to continue writing code in a 50/50 development & leadership format;
- experience with highload production systems;
- real production ownership: servers, DBs, logs, metrics, monitoring, troubleshooting;
- experience in independently investigating and resolving critical production incidents;
- design of scalable and fault-tolerant backend systems;
- experience with microservices architecture;
- confident work with SQL DBs, query optimization, indexes, and performance;
- good understanding of networking and network security;
- practical experience with VPN / ZTNA / network security or development of products with a significant network component;
- understanding of the principles of VPN protocols and network interaction;
- experience with logging, monitoring, and observability;
- code review, mentoring, task decomposition, and estimation;
- ability to independently make technical decisions and interact with the business;
- willingness to actively use AI tools;
- high autonomy and readiness to work in a dynamic startup environment;
- willingness to work with Hubstaff.
Main Tasks
- technical leadership of the backend team;
- hands-on development, architecture, and code review;
- full responsibility for the operation of backend systems in production;
- development of architecture considering highload, scalability, and fault tolerance;
- participation in the development of the VPN / ZTNA / network security component of the product;
- investigation of production incidents and root cause analysis;
- optimization of backend services and databases;
- development of monitoring, logging, and observability;
- development of engineering processes, mentoring, and onboarding;
- participation in hiring and technical assessment of developers;
- direct interaction with the business and founders;
- implementation of AI tools into development processes;
- launching new services and technical initiatives from scratch.
Would be a plus
- Go, Python, or Java;
- strong networking background;
- Kubernetes;
- Kafka, RabbitMQ, or other message brokers;
- Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog;
- migration of a monolith to a microservices architecture;
- experience with products with millions of users / large traffic volume;
- e-commerce, marketplace, or affiliate products;
- experience in both Big Tech and startups;
- Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or other AI tools.
