About Lumify Energy
Lumify Energy is a growing specialist renewable-energy consultancy operating in one of the fastest-changing parts of the global economy.
We help landowners and organisations involved in renewable-energy projects understand and protect their commercial interests through clear, independent advice.
We are looking for a commercially minded lawyer to join our growing, international team and help us address interesting legal and contractual questions across renewable-energy projects.
The Role
As Legal Counsel – Property & Commercial, you will work closely with our Technical Director and wider client-delivery team.
You will review leases and commercial agreements, analyse contractual positions, draft correspondence, research legal issues and help move live client matters towards practical resolution.
This is not a traditional law-firm role. You will work alongside experienced commercial and technical professionals, applying your legal expertise to real-world client problems.
We are looking for someone who can combine strong legal fundamentals with sound commercial judgement. You should be comfortable taking ownership, working through incomplete or conflicting information and recommending a sensible way forward, not simply identifying risks and waiting for further instructions.
You do not need to be a renewable-energy specialist. Strong underlying legal skills, curiosity and the ability to learn are more important.
Key Responsibilities
Contract and Document Review
- Review renewable-energy leases, options, licences, commercial agreements, payment provisions and supporting documents.
- Identify key rights, obligations, restrictions, deadlines, risks and decision points.
- Analyse contractual provisions within their wider commercial context.
- Prepare concise contract summaries, briefing notes, issue lists and comparison tables.
- Support analysis of landowner protections, payment mechanisms, rent-review provisions and other commercially significant terms.
Legal Correspondence and Matter Progression
- Draft clear, persuasive and appropriately firm legal correspondence.
- Analyse positions advanced by counterparties and prepare evidence-based responses.
- Recommend practical next steps when matters stall or positions are disputed.
- Follow outstanding actions and correspondence through to completion.
- Recognise when senior legal input or strategic escalation is required.
Client Support
- Support Lumify Energy’s client engagements where contractual or legal analysis is required.
- Prepare briefing notes, meeting notes, correspondence and follow-up actions.
- Explain complex legal and contractual issues clearly to non-lawyer clients.
- Maintain accurate matter histories, key dates, document records and action trackers.
Legal Research and Analysis
- Research relevant UK legal or other applicable regulatory questions within the agreed scope of the role.
- Distinguish clearly between jurisdictions and identify where specialist advice is required.
- Verify legal authorities, sources, assumptions and citations.
- Identify confidentiality concerns, conflicts, regulatory issues and material legal risks.
Knowledge and Process Development
- Develop practical legal checklists, templates, precedent materials and knowledge notes.
- Help improve Lumify Energy’s legal-review workflows and quality standards.
- Identify recurring legal questions affecting renewable-energy landowners.
- Research and fact-check legal topics for educational articles and guides.
- Translate complex contractual concepts into accessible explanations for non-lawyers.
- Recommend ways to reduce repeated work and avoidable delays.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognised institution.
- Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a current practising certificate, or another professional status specifically approved for the role.
- At least three years’ relevant post-qualification experience.
- Strong experience in property, real estate, land, commercial contracts, or a closely related advisory area.
- Excellent contract-analysis, legal-research and professional-drafting skills.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Ability to explain complex legal and commercial matters clearly to non-lawyers.
- Sound professional judgement, discretion and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage work independently and remain responsive within agreed timelines.
- Experience in renewable energy is welcome but not essential.
It Would Be an Advantage If You Have Experience In
- Commercial property or land transactions.
- Leases, licences and property-related agreements.
- Contractual disputes or contentious correspondence.
- Infrastructure, energy or project agreements.
- Negotiations with developers or commercial counterparties.
- Working with UK or other international clients.
- Developing legal precedents, professional guidance or knowledge resources.
The Right Person for This Role
You are likely to thrive in this role if you:
- Enjoy understanding how contracts operate commercially, not only legally.
- Take responsibility for outcomes and keep matters moving.
- Can recommend a course of action rather than only presenting legal issues.
- Communicate confidently and constructively with lawyers and non-lawyers.
- Remain calm and professional when handling disagreement or difficult counterparties.
- Are comfortable challenging an established view while remaining open to other perspectives.
- Are organised, dependable and committed to following matters through to completion.
- Enjoy learning and developing expertise in a growing industry.
What You’ll Gain
- Exposure to the growing renewable-energy sector.
- Interesting property, contractual and commercial matters.
- Direct collaboration with senior decision-makers.
- Meaningful ownership of live client work.
- Experience working across legal, technical and commercial disciplines.
- The opportunity to help build legal systems, templates and ways of working.
- Flexible, remote work within an international team.
- The potential to grow your responsibilities as Lumify Energy’s legal capability develops.
