Go Developer for a Video Platform

We are developing the infrastructure for Yandex's video platform. It underpins most of the company's services working with video: from movies, series, sports broadcasts, and TV channels on Kinopoisk to product video reviews on Yandex Market and clips in Yandex Music.

The platform handles thousands of active live streams and tens of thousands of uploaded videos daily. It serves millions of viewers simultaneously, withstands over a million RPS for video content delivery, and the total outbound traffic exceeds 10 Tbit/s.

Our team develops backend services for handling live streams and user-generated video, ensuring the full cycle of video content processing.

About the Team

Ownership Engineers in the team are responsible for their services throughout the entire lifecycle: from design and development to launch in production, monitoring, and support.

Technical Decisions We are open to change: any reasoned idea on how to change the tech stack or improve the architecture is welcomed and implemented.

Flexibility in Task Selection We do not limit the scope of responsibility: you can delve into different parts of the platform and influence them — be it high-load infrastructure or video processing algorithms.

Technologies We Use

• Languages: primary development is in Go. The system has components in C++, which are supported and developed by a dedicated part of the team. * Storage systems: PostgreSQL, Redis/Valkey, ClickHouse, and distributed metadata storage based on Raft. * Queues and stream processing: for asynchronous pipelines and event exchange we use YDB Topics — an analogue of Kafka. * Infrastructure: Kubernetes and bare metal. * Video processing: standard tools for video processing and transcoding, including libav and FFmpeg.

What Tasks Await You

Development of Live Stream and Video Infrastructure You will develop and enhance backend services that manage the lifecycle of streams and user-generated video: from receiving the video stream and uploading content to processing, storing metadata, and preparing video for playback.

Development of the Video Platform You will participate in developing the video platform: designing and implementing new capabilities for working with live streams and video, improving the user viewing experience, and adding new product features.

Scaling and Performance Optimization It is important to analyze metrics, identify bottlenecks, and optimize video processing and delivery services. At the platform's scale, even small performance improvements significantly reduce infrastructure load.

Participation in Architectural Tasks In addition, you will participate in architectural design: you will be able to propose and implement technical solutions that help the platform scale and evolve.

We Expect That You

• Have developed high-load distributed services in Go
• Have worked with relational databases and message queues and understand how they work
• Know how to design microservice architecture and APIs (gRPC, REST)
• Write reliable, maintainable, and testable code

Will Be a Plus

• Are familiar with video streaming technologies: codecs (H.264/H.265), containers, ingestion protocols (RTMP/SRT/RTSP) and video delivery protocols (DASH/HLS)
• Know consensus protocols (Raft)
• Are familiar with load balancing algorithms (e.g., fair-share)
• Have worked with FFmpeg or video processing systems
