Bootcamp — an opportunity to work with several teams in the Core Infrastructure subdivision and choose one you'd like to stay in after the probationary period.

How it will work

Over three months, you will work in three different teams within the subdivision: 4 weeks in one, and 3 weeks in two others (the extra week in the first team will be spent on initial adaptation at Yandex). In each team, you will have a buddy — a person who will explain your and the team's areas of responsibility, answer questions, assign tasks, monitor their progress, help, and provide feedback.

At the end of each week, you will have a 1-on-1 meeting with your buddy, where you will receive feedback on your work in the company, the team, and your tasks. In turn, the team and your buddy will give feedback on your work, praise your successes, and help adjust approaches if necessary.

Core Infrastructure comprises stable, highly available, high-load, distributed systems on which almost all Yandex services are built and run. These include cloud data storage, a video platform and its CDN for processing and storing video and managing live broadcasts, data center management systems, the entire Yandex network, including the cloud and data centers, and automation of hardware management processes (and just the servers in our data centers already number tens of thousands).

Challenges

The scale of tasks for our teams is enormous. Yandex services double every year — we process colossal volumes of traffic and data and care about the reliability of the infrastructure for other Yandex services and Yandex Cloud.

In the next couple of years, we will again need to grow by an order of magnitude in RPS, traffic, and the volume of stored and processed data, bring a new data center into operation, launch a video service for the external world, and several new Yandex Cloud services.

To solve these complex tasks, we are looking for experienced backend engineers in C++, Go, or Python who will join the bootcamp program.

What tasks await you

• Develop functionality for the Yandex Object Storage service, including support for the Amazon S3 API and expanding our own API
• Develop systems for managing hardware testing, configuring and updating server software, monitoring hardware health, and hardware accounting and inventory
• Develop metadata storage services for content and uploading user videos
• Develop a transcoding service that processes tens of thousands of videos per day
• Develop a traffic load balancing configuration management service
• Integrate load balancing and DNS management services with external cloud providers
• Develop a notification transport service for all Yandex services

We expect that you

• Confidently write in C++, Go, or Python
• Are accustomed to taking responsibility for the services you develop
• Follow the "boy scout rule": you leave things better than you found them
• Give and receive constructive feedback, want to develop yourself and help colleagues do the same
• Write reliable, high-performance code with documentation and tests
• Know classic algorithms and data structures
• Have worked with SQL

Will be a plus

• Have built high-load systems
• Have worked with video, networking, or large volumes of data
• Have developed network, multithreaded, and asynchronous applications
