The archaeological expedition "In Search of Sarai-Batu 2026" invites volunteers to participate in excavations – archaeologists, historians, scientists, creative individuals, adventurous romantics – everyone who is interested not just in getting acquainted with archaeology, but also in becoming a co-discoverer of historical finds.

In the 2024 field season, the archaeological expedition conducted excavations at a site, which revealed a local human settlement in the 13th century.

The site is multi-layered. There wasn't a single day at the excavation when the team didn't encounter a new ornament on ceramics, or new vessel shapes. During the work, archaeologists discovered a fairly spacious estate. The Golden Horde structure is so huge that its wall width is about a meter. Moreover, under the estate, walls of an earlier pre-Horde structure were found in a pit. A huge number of ceramics from the 12th and 13th centuries were discovered at the excavation, and fragments of even earlier hand-molded pottery are sometimes found.

In the 2025 season, the team continued to explore this unique site. Several interesting discoveries were made!

2026 – the third season at "Eagle's Nest" will continue!

About Responsibilities:

• Assistance may also be needed in food preparation, firewood gathering, and solving other household issues related to camp life.

About the Camp:

• The camp is located in a picturesque place, in a grove, on the river bank. In your free time, you can swim, fish, or simply relax and enjoy the beauty of Astrakhan nature. Far from the noise and bustle of the city – this place is incredibly healing. And in the evenings, heartfelt conversations by the fire, guitar songs under the Astrakhan starry sky.
• The camp is equipped with everything necessary. Field kitchen, shower, toilet. If necessary, you will be provided with a tent and sleeping places.
• The camp and excavation site are a 30-minute drive from Astrakhan and the nearest shops, and it will not be difficult to get there if needed.
