Astra Group
Job description
REST API and CLI for managing resources and clusters. Asynchronous execution of backup and recovery operations through distributed agents.
Tantor XData is an enterprise-grade hardware-software complex (HSC) from the company "Tantor Labs" (part of the "Astra Group").
Its key idea is to combine hardware power and software logic into a single optimized complex for working with databases. The solution is designed for high-load systems where processing speed, fault tolerance, and scalability are critical.
An open vacancy has been announced in the XData Development Department:
Senior+ Go/Python Developer (Backend)
About the project
We are developing the Backman platform – a managed service for automated backup and recovery of TantorDB.
The key task of the system is to ensure reliable management of the lifecycle of PostgreSQL cluster backups in a multi-tenant environment. The platform performs control-plane functions: it manages resource states, schedules asynchronous backup operations, and provides secure access to storage, abstracting the complexity of infrastructure operations and providing a unified API for working with clusters.
The project is implemented in Python with the prospect of transitioning to a Go stack.
The system focuses on automating data management processes and ensures:
- REST API and CLI for managing resources and clusters;
- Asynchronous execution of backup and recovery operations through distributed agents;
- High availability and fault tolerance of the control plane using PostgreSQL as the primary storage;
- Security at the API and infrastructure level (JWT, TLS/mTLS, RBAC, SigV4 validation);
- S3-compatible storage for long-term backup storage through a proxy service.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and development of control-plane components of the platform in Python/Go: API endpoints, state management services, asynchronous operation schedulers.
- Development and support of agents for automating the lifecycle of PostgreSQL cluster backups:
- initiation and configuration of WAL archiving;
- management of full/incremental/differential backups with WAL-G support;
- data recovery (point-in-time recovery);
- real-time monitoring of operation status.
- Implementation of resource orchestration mechanisms, considering multi-tenancy, namespace isolation, and RBAC access rights.
- Integration of monitoring and logging (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana) for platform operation control.
- Development and support of an S3 proxy service for validating SigV4 signatures and secure access to object storage.
- Participation in architectural discussions, analysis of trade-offs, and technical decisions affecting the reliability and evolution of the backup system.
- Interaction with database development and DevOps teams for platform integration with infrastructure components.
- Conducting code reviews and participating in the formation of team engineering standards.
Requirements
- Solid commercial experience in Python and Go development.
- Ability to write maintainable, readable, and structured code, adhering to clean design principles and Python/Go idioms.
- Experience in developing long-running services and control-plane components (scheduler orchestration, job management).
- Understanding of PostgreSQL as a managed service:
- replication (Patroni);
- WAL archiving and point-in-time recovery;
- backup and recovery (WAL-G, pg_basebackup).
- Experience with cloud storage and S3-compatible APIs (MinIO, AWS S3, Cygnustech).
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Docker.
- Experience integrating monitoring and logging (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar).
- Understanding of basic principles of network isolation, secure data transmission, and authentication in distributed systems.
- Ability to independently tackle complex engineering tasks and make technically sound decisions regarding the reliability of the backup system.
- Knowledge of Python and Go – for supporting and migrating the existing solution.
Desirable (will be a plus):
- Practical experience developing Kubernetes operators or similar control-plane components for database orchestration.
- Experience with the Controller-Operator pattern and CRDs in the context of backup automation.
- Understanding of WAL (Write-Ahead Log) principles and replication mechanisms in PostgreSQL.
- Experience integrating multi-tenant systems with RBAC and namespace-based data isolation.
- Experience with distributed file systems (Ceph, GlusterFS, MinIO, and similar).
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code configuration management tools.
- Practical experience in operating or automating PostgreSQL (Patroni, pgBouncer, Pgpool-II).
- General understanding of DevOps approaches and the lifecycle of database infrastructure platforms.
- Understanding of the compute-storage separation principle.
What's important to understand about the role
- This is a Senior+ position with a focus on Go and system engineering of distributed services.
- PostgreSQL, WAL-G, S3 storage, and security are applied domains; the depth of immersion is determined by the task of ensuring backup reliability.
- The role involves active participation in the architectural development of the backup management platform, including stack selection.
