Who are we?
Gazpromneft-NTTS, a project evaluation and analysis center. One of the center's main tasks is the geological and economic evaluation of oil and gas projects. Peculiarities of evaluating projects at an early stage include high uncertainties in both internal parameters, such as the presence, quality, and volume of oil, and external ones, such as the cost of oil in a few years. To obtain high-quality estimates for such projects, a process of developing approaches, methodologies, and tools has been organized. In the field of mathematics, tasks related to probability theory, statistics, combinatorics, and optimization theory most often arise. In the field of programming, these involve automation and prototype development.
Who are we looking for?
- We need a person for our team with a good understanding of the fundamentals of probability theory and combinatorics (distributions, statistics, correlations, analytical formulas),
- knowledge of basic optimization methods (approaches), fundamentals of linear algebra, mathematical analysis, and programming skills (Python, C++, JS/VBA).
- A desire to improve programming skills, readiness to immerse oneself in the specifics of the oil and gas industry, and a desire to develop within a large company are also necessary.
What will the tasks be?
- Automation of calculations and development of auxiliary tools (e.g., a tool for quick calculation of a set of percentiles);
- Development of optimal control algorithms under uncertainty (e.g., whether to drill an exploration well in a new license area; whether to purchase a new area; where it is most profitable to drill a well; when it is best to start building "large" infrastructure; managing a portfolio of projects or options; auction strategies; and all this under geological and economic risks and uncertainties);
- Implementation of developed algorithms for application to real data (Python, C++, Excel/VBA/JS);
- Participation in team meetings to discuss project evaluation methods and approaches (e.g., how best to obtain a probabilistic estimate of oil reserves in an area, given a set of diverse statistics from neighboring areas; how best to evaluate a project involving 10 license areas with the possibility of organizing common infrastructure or partial synergies);
- Consulting colleagues on mathematics and automation topics;
- Preparation of presentation materials for dissemination with algorithms, approaches, and analysis results;
- Possibly writing articles and participating in conferences with new approaches for the industry.
