MS SQL Database Server Administration

We are "Alfa Insurance", the largest Russian insurance company and a technological leader in the industry, and we are inviting an MS SQL Database Server Administrator to our team.

Responsibilities:

1. Administration of MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL DBMS:

   • Installation, setup, and configuration of DBMS in accordance with security standards.
   • Monitoring availability, performance, and errors; configuring metrics in monitoring systems.
   • Development and control of backup and recovery plans.
   • Query optimization, working with indexes, statistics, defragmentation.
   • Ensuring fault tolerance (clustering, Always On, replication).
   • Managing access rights and data security.
   • Participation in incident investigation, troubleshooting failures.

2. Participation in migration projects from MS SQL to PostgreSQL:

   • Development of data migration scripts using pgloader, db-migration-too, etc.
   • Organizing the download of fresh data before the start.
   • Participation in functional and load testing.

3. Documentation: maintaining regulations, instructions, database passports.

4. Interaction with development and operations teams.

Requirements:

1. Education: Higher technical education.

2. Experience: 5+ years in IT, with at least 3 years in DBMS administration (MS SQL Server). Experience with PostgreSQL (1+ year) is welcome.

3. Professional skills (mandatory):

   • Deep knowledge of MS SQL Server: installation, setup, monitoring, backups, recovery.
   • Performance optimization: plan analysis, indexes, statistics.
   • Experience with fault-tolerant solutions (clustering, Always On, replication).
   • Knowledge of T-SQL, writing queries, stored procedures, triggers.
   • Ability to configure monitoring (Zabbix, Grafana, Prometheus).
   • Understanding of DBMS principles, memory management, I/O, TCP/IP networking.
   • Basic Linux administration skills (bash, environment setup).

4. Desirable skills (will be an advantage):

   • Experience migrating from MS SQL to PostgreSQL.
   • Knowledge of PL/pgSQL, PostgreSQL administration (setup, replication).
   • Scripting skills for automation (Python, bash).

5. Technical English (reading documentation).

6. Good written and spoken communication skills.
